Behavior and Data Specialist Job Description
Hired by the Principal, Assistant Principal, and Director of Social Services
Reports to and evaluated by the Director of Social Services
The role of the Behavior Specialist is critical to the academic success and achievement of students enrolled at Haven Academy Charter School. Each Behavior Specialist is designated to work with 2 grade level spans; P/K, 1/2, 3/4 and is responsible for supporting the behavior and social emotional development of students. This is a twelve month position.
This individual should be familiar with the following:
Behavior Background: CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention), FBA and BIP creation, Responsive Classroom, Love and Logic, Trauma Informed Response.
Academic Background: Fountas and Pinnell Reading Benchmark, Guided Reading, SPIRE, Orton Gillingham, Hochman Writing Method, Shared Poem/Text, Terc Investigations, Context for Learning, CGI (Cognitively Guided Instruction) and the Reading and Writing Workshop model.
This individual should:
- Be certified in Special Education and have a Masters in Education
- Have a minimum five years full-time classroom teaching experience in an urban setting
- Have a proven track record of raising student achievement scores in an urban environment
- Have a strong desire to work within an innovative, urban educational program
- Be data driven and have the knowledge to organize and analyze behavior and social emotional data
Responsibilities:
- Respond to student crisis and outbursts and follow up with all involved (including notifying families) to minimize incidents on assigned grade level bands, as well as support other grade level bands when needed
- Collaborate with Behavior Associate in responding to student behavior and collecting data
- Collaborate with Family and Student Specialist in working with families to develop strategies for increasing academic and/or social emotional skills at school and at home
- Review data on a regular basis and develop well documented behavior support plans
- Conduct FBAs (Functional Behavior Assessments) and schedule meetings with teachers to develop BIPs (Behavior Intervention Plans) and progress monitor as needed
- Monitor data and create monthly summaries for grade level bands
- Provide Case Management for all students on grade level bands with IEPS (Individualized Education Plans) by collecting and monitoring goals set by the teachers
- Work with and coach teachers to aid in classroom management and differentiation and specific scholar behavior support
- Ensure that those responsible are updating the behavior portions (social emotional/behavior and modification) of SIT documents regularly
- Use DESSA data and collaborate with the FSS (Family and Student Specialist) to recommend social emotional intervention
- Provide staff development in social emotional and behavioral support interventions during summer institute and throughout the year
- Participate in Haven Academy Student Update Meetings (SUM) for each assigned class and Social Emotional Team meetings
Other responsibilities include:
- Respond to parent, student, and colleague concerns effectively and in a timely manner
- Encourage students’ positive interactions with other students and adults
- Value and promote peaceful conflict resolution and creative and authentic problem solving; Uphold the school’s system of logical consequences;engage in effective and appropriate classroom management
- Keep an organized workspace
- Maintain and communicate high academic and personal expectations for all students with families, support staff, specialty teachers, and leaders
- Participate in a variety of staff development programs, including a yearly individualized professional development plan, two-week summer PD, and individual PD sessions
- Organize and lead at least 2 family events during the school year
- Ensure that student records, child welfare status, and family details are kept confidential and are only discussed with school employees when relevant
- Develop and participate in an individualized professional development plan
- Uphold and promote the school’s mission and vision
- Perform other duties as needed to support the ongoing development of Haven Academy (e.g. breakfast, lunch/recess, dismissal, etc)
Qualifications
- Excellent oral and written communication/interpersonal skills as well as a desire to collaborate with various stakeholders to help develop a whole-school community
- Experience managing and developing family leadership
- Outstanding instructional skills, including the ability to motivate and challenge students
- Demonstrated ability to create and maintain a warm and orderly environment
- A strong sense of personal accountability for student achievement
- Unwavering conviction that all students can learn at a high level
