In the absence of traditional public schools that could fully respond to the unique needs of child welfare-involved youth, Haven Academy partnered with The New York Foundling in 2008 to become the first effort of its kind in the country.
Our building is bright and colorful, uses natural materials, and is designed to be flexible for collaboration. Students are at the center of the design of the school, with academic and social emotional needs built into the physical learning environment. We also offer mental health, medical, and dental services within the building for our community and beyond.
Cool Down Area
Every classroom has an area where students can take a break and recharge or regulate themselves, enabling students to stay within their learning environments even when they need an independent moment.
Wall Displays
Throughout the school building – in classrooms, hallways, and offices – there are consistent wall charts with the school values, social emotional tools, and student work.
Mood Meters
Every classroom has an age-appropriate, visual mood meter – an essential tool for students to identify and recognize their emotions.
Areas of Learning
Classrooms are specifically designed to support different types of instruction, play, and interaction. This includes spaces for small groups, whole class instruction, and individual focus areas.
